Increasing food and energy demands due to growing populations and dwindling land resources are compelling nations to explore alternate means for sustenance and economic development. Since oceans promise both these opportunities with a vast reservoir of food, energy, and wealth, the ‘Blue Economy’ is increasingly emerging as a new hope for tomorrow. Blue Economy, being sustainable and multi-sectoral, encompasses a variety of economic activities linked to oceanic or blue resources while ensuring environmental sustainability.

These range from the exploration of sea-based natural resources such as fish, hydrocarbons, and minerals, renewable energy, marine biotechnology, maritime industries, coastal tourism, and so on. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012, commonly known as ‘Rio+20’, laid out the concept of the Blue Economy evolving as a viable and sustainable economic model. The UN General Assembly adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals, out of which few are directly linked to Blue Economy. Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC), the Premiere Maritime Exhibition in the Asian subcontinent region, focus on reaping benefits associated with the Blue Economy/ maritime sector.

PIMEC intends to provide a foundation to bring together stakeholders from diverse maritime industries of hydrocarbon extraction, coastal development, and shipping port, infrastructure, fisheries, marine tourism, offshore renewable energy. aquaculture, seabed mining, marine biotechnology, etc. to exploit untapped resources of Blue.

Economy, particularly in Pakistan. This exhibition will showcase the complete potential of maritime industries in Pakistan with an aim to improve human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental and ecological scarcities.

Events such as this Maritime exhibition play a vital role in drawing attention to the maritime industry’s contribution to the global economy and raising maritime awareness amongst the general populace.
